Shore Acres State Park
Perched on spectacular sandstone cliffs, this park was once the estate of a timber baron. It features lush formal gardens that bloom year-round and a secluded cove. It is arguably the best storm-watching spot on the entire coast.
Parking fee required. Holiday lights in December.
Cape Arago State Park
Located at the end of the road, this headland offers panoramic views of the Pacific. A steep trail leads down to tide pools rich with marine life, while the overlook provides a front-row seat to Simpson Reef's seal and sea lion colonies.
Excellent wildlife viewing.
Charleston Marina
The heart of the town, this is a working marina where commercial fishing boats unload their catch. Visitors can walk the docks, go crabbing, or charter a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Sunset Bay State Park
A rare gem on the coast, this bay is protected by towering sea cliffs, creating calm waters safe for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The sandy beach is a family favorite.

Charleston Marine Life Center
Run by the University of Oregon, this aquarium and museum showcases the marine biodiversity of the region. Exhibits include deep-sea specimens, skeletons, and touch tanks with living tide pool creatures.

Simpson Reef Overlook
One of the largest haul-out sites for pinnipeds on the coast. From the viewing deck, you can see and hear hundreds (sometimes thousands) of harbor seals, California sea lions, and elephant seals on the Shell Island rocks.

South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
Just south of town, this 5,000-acre reserve was the first of its kind in the nation. It offers miles of hiking trails through wetlands and forests, providing a quiet escape into nature.

Bastendorff Beach
A wide, expansive stretch of beach located near the jetty. It's popular for beachcombing, kite flying, and watching the massive waves crash against the south jetty during winter storms.

Cape Arago Pack Trail

South Slough Estuary Loop
Meander through lush marshes and dense forests. Boardwalks allow you to walk right over the estuary waters, offering great birdwatching opportunities.
Yoakam Point Trail
A short trek leading to a secluded cove and rock formation known as Five Mile Point. Great for tide pooling during low tides.
Sunset Bay to Shore Acres
Part of the Oregon Coast Trail, this section hugs the cliff edge, offering dramatic views of the geology and the crashing waves below.
Simpson Reef Trail
A short, accessible path leading to the main viewing area for the seal and sea lion colony. The noise of the animals guides you there!
Bastendorff Beach Walk
A flat beach walk extending to the South Jetty. It offers a unique perspective of the harbor entrance and is a prime spot for finding agates.
